Who we are
Dr Ambedkar International Mission Netherlands (AIM Netherlands) is a not-for-profit, charitable social community group formed by Indian Ambedkarite Buddhist expats living in the Netherlands. Our members include researchers, engineers, doctors, IT specialists, educators and other professionals who have made the Netherlands their home. We come together around a shared commitment to the thoughts, philosophy and mission of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, and to the values of liberty, equality and fraternity enshrined in the Constitution of India.
As a chapter of Dr Ambedkar International Mission — a global network active in countries including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, France, Germany, Belgium, UAE, Malaysia and Australia — AIM Netherlands contributes a Dutch and European perspective to international Ambedkarite dialogue and advocacy.
Our mission
The AIM Netherlands chapter is part of the global network of the Dr Ambedkar International Mission — a socio-cultural organisation dedicated to realising Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's vision of an egalitarian society guided by the principles of the Indian Constitution. We are committed to promoting the values of liberty, equality and fraternity, and to fostering a just society not only within the Indian diaspora but across communities globally.
Our chapter serves as a cultural and intellectual hub for Ambedkarites in the Netherlands: a platform to celebrate our heritage while advocating social justice and inclusion. AIM Netherlands honours Dr B.R. Ambedkar's struggle and philosophy, and empowers members of the diaspora to cultivate a strong cultural identity and a sense of purpose within their local society.
Our history
AIM was founded in 1994 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, by Non-Resident Indians under the visionary leadership of Mr Rajkumar Kamble. Since then, the organisation has grown into an international platform for Ambedkarites, spreading Dr B.R. Ambedkar's teachings, philosophy and vision of social equality. AIM Netherlands continues this legacy by connecting the local community to global efforts and discussions on social reform.
Our role in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has a small but steadily growing Ambedkarite community. AIM Netherlands offers that community a cultural and intellectual home: a place to meet other Ambedkarites, celebrate Buddhist and Indian heritage, remember the struggle against caste-based discrimination, and connect meaningfully with Dutch neighbours, universities and civil-society partners.
We organise talks, reading circles, Jayanti observances, Buddhist commemorations and family-friendly cultural events. We also collaborate with researchers, student groups and human rights organisations interested in Dr Ambedkar's work on equality, constitutional democracy, women's rights and labour rights.
Our values
AIM Netherlands is a purely intellectual, cultural and community-oriented organisation with no political affiliations. We draw on Dr Ambedkar's parting message — “Educate, Agitate, Organize” — to guide our work:
- Educate: sharing knowledge about Dr Ambedkar's life, thought and social reform work.
- Organize: building a supportive community for Ambedkarites and allies in the Netherlands and Europe.
- Agitate: standing with the marginalised through peaceful advocacy, dialogue and research.
Objectives
- To unite Ambedkarites in the Netherlands and provide a supportive network for social, cultural and intellectual engagement.
- To promote awareness about the social struggles of marginalised communities, particularly Dalits, and Dr B.R. Ambedkar's role in advocating for their upliftment.
- To organise seminars, workshops and cultural events that introduce Dr Ambedkar's philosophy to academics, professionals and the wider public in the Netherlands.
- To provide a platform for families and individuals to engage in meaningful cultural and social interactions, strengthening both personal identity and community bonds.
- To instill Indian Buddhist cultural values in younger generations, shaping compassionate, informed and globally responsible citizens.
Our community
AIM Netherlands is composed of Ambedkarite intellectuals and professionals, including engineers, doctors, lawyers, IT specialists and scientists, many with advanced degrees from universities worldwide. As a purely intellectual and cultural organisation, AIM maintains no political affiliations, focusing solely on education, social empowerment and cultural enrichment.
Activities
The chapter organises a variety of events, including:
- Seminars and symposiums on Dr B.R. Ambedkar's philosophy and social reform initiatives.
- Cultural events celebrating Indian heritage and Buddhist traditions.
- Networking opportunities for professionals and families across the Netherlands.
- Collaboration with universities and research institutions on caste, equality and Dr Ambedkar's contributions.
Part of a global movement
AIM Netherlands actively connects with the global Ambedkarite community currently operating in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Germany, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Brunei, Malaysia, Australia, Belgium, Sweden, Norway and elsewhere, contributing to international conventions and dialogues. Dr Ambedkar International Mission has hosted international conventions in cities including Kuala Lumpur (1998, 2011, 2024), Paris (2014) and Fukuoka (2023), fostering cross-cultural collaboration and advocacy.
AIM Netherlands participates in this wider movement while focusing its day-to-day work on the Dutch and European Ambedkarite diaspora.
